Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was born an illegitimate child in the backwater, rural area of Vinci, Italy. At the age of 14, he was apprenticed to the artist Verocchio-- and he flourished. Verocchio once set his brushes down and declared that he had been outdone by his own student and would never paint again. Painting, of course, was hardly Leonardo's sole focus, but he achieved the rank of maestro by the time he was 20, and went on from there.

Of course, for all of Leonardo's inventions, intelligence, and ability to paint, his life was far from perfect: he was thrown into prison for two months when he was 24 on a sodomy charge, aimed to humiliate both him and the powerful Medici family, with whom he had ties to. While it was eventually thrown out, Leonardo may have taken a turn for the more bitter if he hadn't then met Ezio Auditore, a charming 17 year old, who was suddenly caught up in a web of politics and murder.

After the hanging of Ezio's two brothers and father, Leonardo quickly became something of a confidant to him-- making him weapons, translating codices, and in general being a friend to him. For a pacifist like Leonardo, being friends with an Assassin may seem odd-- but he's fond enough of Ezio that it doesn't matter.
